Q&A Federal Election 2021 series: COVID-19, Response to the Sherwood Park News

The last 18 months have tested the resolve and endurance of our communities as we faced COVID-19 together.

Because of programs administered by the federal Liberal government, we were able to ensure individuals, businesses, and communities were supported as we navigated a once-in-a-lifetime challenge.

As we look towards recovery, a re-elected Liberal government will continue to support our communities by:

  • Extending the Canada Recovery Hiring Program to March 31, 2022 to enable businesses to hire more workers and get Canadians back to work.

  • Providing Canada’s tourism industry with temporary wage and rent support of up to 75 per cent of their expenses to help them get through the winter months.

  • Continuing to advocate for 10 Dollar A Day Childcare in Alberta, which will help parents — especially moms of young children — re-enter the workforce at rates commensurate with pre-pandemic levels, knowing their children are safe.

These measures will build on supports introduced during the pandemic, including the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), which saved 5 million jobs.

Thanks to the federal Liberal government, Canadians are leading the world in vaccination rates and are now welcoming Moderna to Canada, as they set up a new, world-class research production hub. This is a major step towards rebuilding our biomanufacturing and life sciences sector. The Liberals want to ensure Canada has the ability to protect its citizens, and the capacity to manufacture lifesaving pharmaceuticals, in a timely fashion.

The federal Liberal government has also pledged to introduce new vaccine requirements so Canadians can travel with peace of mind, domestically, via air and train, and enforce rules regarding international travellers. Federal workers will also be required to protect themselves and each other from COVID-19 by being vaccinated.

The opioid crisis has worsened across Canada, and especially in Alberta, during the pandemic. A re-elected Liberal government will make new investments to expand services in our communities with more in-patient rehab beds and increase the capacity of effective programs such as InSite and other safe consumption sites.

With your support, I promise that I will work tirelessly to ensure that we continue to move forward in a way that makes Canada stronger and makes Sherwood Park-Fort Saskatchewan an even better place to live and raise a family.
